ONE - Black and White - the two most extreme ends of the colour spectrum - two opposite colours that work best when used together. White often represents innocence, purity and new beginnings. While Black could be seen as intimidating or rigid, it is also often associated with sophistication, luxury, confidence and strength. These 2 colours are the most clearly defined and also the most versatile because unlike most other colours, they go well with every colour.
One’s strive for virtue (White) but can also be rigid and judgemental towards those who do not (Black). One’s also perceive the world in more of a right and wrong (black and white) way and rarely see shades of grey. A defence mechanism of a One is Reaction Formation. This is a psychological defence where our mind turns something into its polar opposite to render it less threatening (black and white polar opposite colours) FOUR - Magenta - the most unique and mysterious colour, because it doesn’t actually exist on the light spectrum. It has no wavelength attributed to it, unlike all the other spectrum colours. It is often referred to simply as purple, but it is hard to pinpoint it exactly (point often mistaken as a shade of pink or violet or indigo). In the meaning of colours, magenta represents universal love at its highest level and is identified as the colour of the non-conformist, the free spirit.
Type Fours highlight their individuality as a means of self expression. By over identifying with what makes them special and unique, they are seeking to minimise what they perceive to be their ‘fatal flaw’, the missing piece. Fours are naturally emotionally intuitive and can be described as the ‘romantics’ of the enneagram. Fours defence mechanism of ‘introjection’ leads them to take something that is an outside problem and internalise it as having come from within. SEVEN - Bright Yellow - The brightest colour of the visible spectrum and it is the most noticeable of all colours by the human eye. It means happiness and optimism; Like a light bulb switching on, yellow is often connected to new ideas and creativity. It is the colour of high energy, enthusiasm, hope, fun, and cheerfulness.
Type Seven’s exude energy, enthusiasm and an optimistic outlook. They seek pleasure in various forms to distract themselves from facing pain, fear or unpleasant feelings. They are always thinking ahead towards better and more enjoyable future possibilities. People are drawn to their joy and positivity. Seven’s defence mechanism of Rationalisation leads them to rationalise any action or attitude without acknowledging the true motive behind it or accepting any bad feelings or consequences associated with that behaviour. |
TWO - Gentle Blue - represents both the sky and the sea, and is associated with open spaces, freedom, inspiration and sensitivity. Also represents depth, trust, loyalty and sincerity. Light/Gentle blue is felt as welcoming and peaceful, it is not overbearing and fits nicely in the background.
Two’s seek to create connections between themselves and those around them by meeting needs and being warm and friendly. Two’s main defence mechanism is repression which leads them to repress feelings that might impact their connection with others. FIVE - Dark Blue - This shade of Blue is found between Royal Blue and Navy Blue. Capturing a little of both in its essence. Conveys importance, confidence and authority, as well as intelligence, stability, honour, integrity, and depth. Like black, it carries a sense of elegance and sophistication. Traditionally associated with the uniforms of trusted, honoured positions like police, medic’s and military/navy.
Type Five’s pride themselves on gathering as much knowledge as possible in order to make an informed decision. They often possess a great deal of knowledge and expertise in particular areas of study. The type Five’s defence mechanism of isolation can mean they intellectualise feelings (talk about them) instead of feeling them. EIGHT - Firebrick Red - Associated with activity, energy, danger, aggression and passion. Red is one of the most powerful and aggressive colours, it stimulates excitement, boldness and bravery, action and encourages swift decisions. (Can also be misread, in some Eastern cultures its meaning is almost the opposite of the above description, connected to peace, good fortune, dignity and grandeur).
Type Eight’s are very assertive, powerful and in control. They believe it is unsafe to be weak and vulnerable and will leave them open to betrayal. Eights seek intensity in every environment they are a part of. Eights will fight against injustice and fight for the weak and vulnerable. The Eight’s defence mechanism of Denial leads them to deny any weaknesses or vulnerabilities they might have as a way to remain strong and confident and immune to attack. |
THREE - Gold - associated with illumination, love, compassion, courage, passion, magic, and wisdom. Gold is a precious metal that is associated with wealth, grandeur, and prosperity, as well as sparkle, glitz, and glamour.
Three’s seek to create an image of value & success (gold) to the world around them. Three’s often illuminate the way for those around them by encouraging them to try new things and inspire them with their passion and wealth of ideas. Three’s defence mechanism is Identification. Three’s control how people see them and fill their need for approval by identifying with a specific image (wealth, grandeur, prosperity) that is valuable to those around them. SIX - Emerald Green - symbolises balance and harmony. With strong associations with nature and the environment. It is seen as the colour of luck, freshness and renewal. In colour psychology, green is thought to help balance emotions and promote a sense of calm and clarity.
Type Six’s strive for calm and clarity as their minds can often be in chaos. Their desire is to achieve a certain level of faith and trust in their environment and receive support from those closest to them. Six’s can also bring a fresh perspective on things as they see all angles of a situation. Six’s defence mechanism of Projection leads them to manage their fears by attributing it to something/someone external in order to feel safe internally. NINE - Grey - A cool, neutral, and balanced colour. It stands between the extremes of White and Black, holding a little of both within itself. It can feel emotionless, moody colour and can be associated with the feeling of dullness, tiredness or boredom. However it can also carry a very different meaning of formal, professional and sophistication. The colour grey is a timeless and practical colour.
Type Nine’s tend to be self-forgetful and merge with others to gain love and belonging. They are consciously aware of keeping the peace both internally and externally. They make great mediators and have the amazing ability to see all sides of an issue. The defence mechanism of a Nine is Dissociation. This leads a Nine to ‘fall asleep’ to their own needs, as they have habitually dissociated themselves from un-peaceful feelings in order to keep everything without and within calm. |
